Annual Golf Competition and Dinner – 16 August 2023

Coordinators:  Col Tom Carter (Retd) and Comdt Michael Flood (Retd)

The Artillery Club’s Annual Golf Outing and Dinner took place on 16 August 2023 at the Royal Curragh Golf Club, County Kildare.  Club members and guests participated in the golf competition and later were joined by non-golfers for an enjoyable dinner in The Kaedeen Hotel.  A total of 23 attended this very successful event.

While researching the history of the Curragh Golf Club, which was renamed Royal Curragh in 2013, Colonel Billy Gibson (Retd) found evidence of the club’s foundation in 1858, making it the oldest Golf Club and Golf Course in Ireland.

The Royal Curragh Golf Club is a hilly heathland type of golf course laid over 4,700 acres of sylvan parklands.

A total of 16 golfers took part in the single Stableford Competition, including Brigadier-General Brendan McGuinness, General Officer Commanding Defence Forces Training Centre, and President of the Royal Curragh Golf Club.

Confined to serving and retired members of the Artillery Club, now in its 20th year, the Captain Jack Jones Perpetual Trophy, now in its 20th year was won by Colonel Tom O’Callaghan (Retd) with a score of 38 points.

In second place with a score of 37 points was Colonel Billy Nott (Retd), third place was shared by Lieutenant-Colonel Cormac Lalor (Retd) and Lieutenant-Colonel Brendan Crowley (Retd) who both had 36 points.

John Crowley won the Visitors Prize with 39 points, which was the highest score of the day.

Prior to an excellent dinner in the Curragh Room of The Kaedeen Hotel, the prizes were presented by Colonel Tom Carter (Retd).

The Kaedeen Hotel is the oldest family run hotel in Kildare and is highly rated for its outstanding attention to guest hospitality.  Its location is complemented by 8 acres of beautiful floral garden displays.

The Committee acknowledges the organisers and coordinators of this very successful event Colonel Tom Carter (Retd) and Commandant Michael Flood (Retd), and the renowned hospitality and excellent support provided by the Royal Curragh Golf Club and the Kaedeen Hotel.

We look forward to next year’s outing which will be the twenty-first year of competition for the Captain Jack Jones Perpetual Trophy.
