The Report from the Commission on the Defence Forces was published on 09 February 2022.
The Commission was established on foot of a commitment in the Programme for Government and Government decision in December 2020 which also agreed its terms of reference and membership.
The Commission was comprised of members with a broad range of experience and expertise both nationally and internationally.
During a period of 13 months, the Commission considered the appropriate capabilities,
structures and staffing of both the Permanent Defence Force and the Reserve Defence
Force with a view to the immediate future, and the uncertain period beyond 2030.
As part of its consultation process, the Commission received 480 submissions, and met with over a thousand personnel of all ranks, at Defence Forces locations across Ireland.
